School Health Resident Nurses
These are nurses who are stationed at each public school to provide necessary medical services to students with minor ailments, such as:
- pink eye.
- headache, stomach ache, tooth ache.
- frequent vomiting.
- sore throat with fever.
- diarrhoea.
- persistent cough.
- frequent or uncontrolled urination.
- painful or burning urination.
- Ringworm and multiple sores.
- Passing of Worms.
- Discharging or painful ears.
- Difficulty in hearing.
- Vision problems.
- Chronic tiredness and sleeping in class.
- Malnutrition (either underweight or overweight).
- Missed monthly periods or excessive menstrual bleeding.
- Backward or “mirror” writing.
- Insect bites and stings.
- Fits (epileptic and hysterical).
- Limps, or abnormalities of the limbs.
- Abnormalities of the penis or testes.
Resident Nurses responsibilities:
- Establishing and maintaining a close working relationship with principals, teachers and guidance counselors.
- Maintaining an “At Risk” Students Register.
- Treating all minor ailments as they present themselves (referring as necessary).
- Assisting with health education.
- Assisting School Health team with medical screenings where necessary.
- Reporting all emergencies to the Department of Public Health, School Health Services and the school principal.
