FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas – The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture proudly hosted a vibrant Youth March and Rally that started on the grounds of the C.A. Smith Complex and concluded at Independence Park on October 20, 2024. The event brought together various youth organisations, schools, church groups, and marching bands from across Grand Bahama. The event marked a significant celebration of youth as part of the Ministry’s ongoing festivities for October.

Before the march commenced, Deputy Director of Education, Michelle Bowleg, delivered an uplifting message, emphasising the importance of youth participation. "I’m wearing a button today that says, 'Every Child Counts,' which signifies that if you are here today, you count—you matter," she stated. "Your presence not only highlights the wonderful things you’re doing in your schools but also the positive impact you’re making in your community.  On behalf of the Ministry of Education, it’s always a wonderful thing to be in the company of students."

Parliamentary Secretary and Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama and Bimini, Mr. Kingsley Smith, expressed his delight in attending the event. "Let me thank the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture for ensuring that Youth Month is never lacking in focus or underrepresented," he said.  "Every year, we take the time to celebrate you, the youth of this country. We do this because we recognize your enormous potential for change and positive action. You are vital resources capable of developing innovative solutions for our communities."

Mr. Smith continued, addressing the often-negative narrative surrounding youth. "Combating this false narrative is our collective responsibility. You are already leaders of today, deserving a place at the table in discussions that impact your lives—whether political, economic, or social.”

He urged the youth to embrace their creativity and drive. "You are in your prime, at your most creative and most prolific stage.  Don’t underestimate your role and abilities; the next big ideas, the next great solutions and creative plan must come from you.  Present the issues and start a conversation in a direction that will lead to socially beneficial conclusions. This is your moment — seize it."

As the march concluded at Independence Park, the youth were entertained by a vibrant Junkanoo rush out.

The next event, the Career Fair, will take place on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Grand Lucayan at 9:30 a.m.
